Guidance
Your on-campus counselor or career guidance specialist (CGS) can
help you with ROP program selection, completion of registration, and
assistance with job placement. Career guidance specialists may
assist you with career interest surveys, aptitude testing, career
research, career information, and career goals. Credits apply to
high school graduation, as determined by the participating district.
The number of credits are determined by the student’s hours of
program attendance and active participation.

ROP classes for
Cypress High School students:
Careers with Children: Preschool Lab—Are
you patient, inventive, creative and organized? If not, you
will learn to be in this real-world setting. You will learn
to recognize developmental markers in children ages 2 ½ to 5
in the preschool lab. You’ll learn teaching methods that
work to help little children learn and love to learn in a
happy, structured environment. This class prepares students
for advanced training and for working with young children in
preschool and home settings. Orange Coast College grants
advanced placement and/or credits at the college to students
who complete the course with grades of A or B. See your
instructor for details.
Child Development—You’ll
study children’s developmental stages from conception
through early adolescence. You will focus on the
emotional/psychological, cognitive and physical aspects of
development, and on the influences on development of
heredity and environmental factors. Students who
successfully complete Child Development (one year course)
are eligible for one year of UC-approved a-g credit. The
class prepares you for advanced education.
Emergency Medical Responder—If
you are interested in any public safety service
career—firefighter, paramedic, police officer,
lifeguard—this class will get you started on the fast
track. You’ll learn skills to provide immediate care to ill
or injured persons and assist Emergency Medical Service
(EMS) providers. You will learn emergency assessment and
triage skills and responsibilities. Completion of this class
satisfies the prerequisites for the EMT class, and prepares
you for more education.
After-school class for high school students.
Floral Design—Do
you have an eye for pleasing design? Are you creative and
love to work with your hands? In Floral Design you will
learn flower, foliage and tool identification, plant
propagation, construction of floral arrangements and
corsages, merchandising, elements and principles of floral
design, and skills essential for employment in the floral
industry. This class also prepares you for advanced
education in horticulture.
Forensic Science/Crime Scene Investigation (Introduction)—You will learn the basics of crime scene evidence collection
and investigation, crime scene photography, and diagramming
a crime scene. You’ll learn who to interview and what
questions to ask. You’ll sharpen your reasoning skillls,
your observation skills, and your knowledge of forensic
science detection techniques. This class prepares you for
entry-level employment and college studies in the field.
Health Fitness/Sports Medicine—Love
sports and fitness? You will learn to prevent sports
injuries by the use of proper body mechanics in exercise.
You’ll also learn to recognize and evaluate sports injuries
when they occur. You will learn rehabilitation methods and
current treatments. You will also learn to assess health
fitness and develop an exercise regimen to maintain and
promote physical well-being. The class prepares you for
advanced training and for working under supervision with
your school’s sports team members.
Legal
and Law Enforcement—You
will gain an understanding of what substance abuse does to
the body and mind; criminal, traffic and juvenile law,
judicial proceedings, and emergency preparedness. The class
emphasizes the importance of safety, effective
communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills as
well as professional development. You may have the
opportunity to participate in field trips to justice
institutions and ride-alongs with police officers. The
class prepares you for advanced training.
