Guidance
Your on-campus counselor or career guidance specialist (CGS) can
help you with ROP program selection, completion of registration, and
assistance with job placement. Career guidance specialists may
assist you with career interest surveys, aptitude testing, career
research, career information, and career goals. Credits apply to
high school graduation, as determined by the participating district.
The number of credits are determined by the student’s hours of
program attendance and active participation.

Most of the following classes are for Sonora High
School students only.
After-school
classes may be open to ALL high school students, and to
adults (space permitting).
Aquatic/Marine Diving Occupations (Beginning Scuba Diving)—Want
to work as a marine biologist, scuba instructor, dive
master, salvage diver, lifeguard? Then this class is for
you! Learn in the Sonora pool during the week, travel to
the ocean for the real thing every other Saturday.
Beginning class includes training in Community Water Safety
and CPR for the Professional Rescuer. Earn advanced
placement or credits at community colleges. The class
prepares students for advanced training.
After-school class
Aquatic/Marine Diving Occupations/Marine Science—Use
your diving skills to acquire an understanding of marine
life, habitats, and economies. Experience research
environments and gain a working knowledge of marine algae,
plants, animals, and explore their structures, functions,
behaviors and adaptations. Ocean dive every other Sunday.
Students who successfully complete this class with a grade
of A or B are eligible for one semester of UC-approved a-g
credit. Class prepares students for entry-level jobs and
advanced training.
After-school class
Art in Animation—If
you’re serious about a career in the commercial
art/animation world, take this class! This 3-D computer
animation, 2-D graphics and animation, traditional media,
and design course includes design, rendering and animation
using Softimage XSI and Maya software. This class will
also be offered after school. Students in grades 9-12 may
enroll.
Introduction to Automotive Technology—If
you are going to drive a car, you’ll want to know everything
taught in the beginning course, such as automotive systems
and basic repairs, tire and oil changes, and what tools fix
what parts.
Computer Graphics and Design—Paint,
inks, brushes and computer software are all tools in the contemporary artist’s box. You’ll learn graphic software
such as Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign and print
production preparation. This class gets you ready for
entry-level employment in such positions as layout artist,
graphic artist, desktop publisher and production artist, as
well as for advanced education.
Child Development—Want
to be a teacher or child psychologist? You’ll learn the
stages from conception through early adolescence, including
the major theories of development and their application.
Focus is on emotional/psychological, cognitive, and physical
development, and on the influence of heredity and
environmental factors. Students who successfully complete
this one-year course are eligible for one year of UC-approved
a-g credit. Students are preparing for entry-level jobs and
advanced training.
Culinary Arts (Beginning and Advanced)—If
you love to cook or want to learn, this class will give you
more than the basics. You’ll learn garde manger (the art of
fruit and vegetable carving) basic cooking, and some
international cooking. You’ll also learn safety and
sanitation, nutrition basics, and food service operations.
The class prepares students for entry-level jobs and
advanced training.
Forensic Science/Crime Scene Investigation (Introduction)—You
will learn the basics of crime scene evidence collection and
investigation, crime scene photography, and diagramming a
crime scene. You’ll learn who to interview and what
questions to ask. You’ll sharpen your reasoning skills,
your observation skills, and your knowledge of forensic
science. This class prepares students for entry-level
employment and college studies in the field.
Principles of Engineering—part of Project Lead the Way,
a curriculum designed by engineers for future engineers!
You will explore careers in engineering and technology,
including technology systems and manufacturing processes.
The course addresses social and political consequences of
technological change. Students who successfully complete the
one-year class are eligible for one year of UC-approved a-g
elective credit.
Introduction to Engineering Design—part
of Project Lead the Way, boasts a curriculum designed by
engineers for future engineers! You will design solutions to
real-world challenges, including improving existing products
and inventing new ones. Using sophisticated
three-dimensional modeling software, you will analyze the
problems and create design solutions. Students who
successfully complete the one-year class are eligible for
one year of UC-approved a-g elective credit.
Legal and Law Enforcement—You
will gain an understanding of what substance abuse does to
the body and mind. You will also learn about criminal law,
traffic and juvenile law, judicial proceedings, and
emergency preparedness. Successful students will have the
opportunity to participate in field trips to justice
institutions and ride-alongs with police officers. The
class prepares students for advanced training.
Lifeguard Training Classes—Love the water, Baywatch
reruns? Are you a really strong swimmer? You’ll learn the
skills necessary for certification as an American Red Cross
Lifeguard, including ARC CPR for the Professional Rescuer,
oxygen administration and use of the Automated External
Defibrillator.
After-school class
Medical Careers Academy: Medical Careers I—You
will identify roles and responsibilities of a wide variety
of health care professionals and apply basic entry-level
health care to patients in supervised health care settings,
including doctors’ offices, clinics and hospitals. If you
successfully complete the classroom portion, you may be able
to intern in these professional settings. Students are
preparing for advanced training.
Medical Careers Academy: Medical Careers II—Body Diseases
and Disorders—Learn
human anatomy and physiology, normal body system functions
and disorders of those systems. You’ll gain a foundation on
which your professional knowledge and judgment will be
built. If you successfully complete the classroom portion,
you may be able to intern in professional settings. Students
are preparing for advanced training. Students who
successfully complete this one-year class are eligible for
one year of UC-approved elective credit.
Medical Careers Academy: Medical Assistant: Clinical (Back
Office)—You’ll
learn to assist the physician with patient exams and minor
surgical procedures; how to give breathing treatments,
administer ordered medications; how to withdraw blood, and
handle specimens for lab work, and assist with diagnostic
procedures. If you successfully complete the classroom
portion, you may be able to intern in professional settings.
You are preparing for advanced training and entry-level
employment.
Medical Careers Academy: Fundamentals of Nursing—You’ll
learn basic care of patients with simple health problems,
including body mechanics, how to initiate nursing care, how
to take vital signs, advanced medical terminology, ethics
and legal procedures related to the nursing profession.
Students are preparing for advanced training, and upon
successful completion, may proceed to Vocational Nurse
training.
Visual Communications—If
you agree with the quote “A picture is worth a thousand
words,” you’ll want to take this class. You’ll learn the
fine art of communicating visually, using art and graphic
design concepts, elements and principals of design, color
theory, and typography in your projects. This class is a-g
college credit certified. Students who successfully complete
this two- semester course can earn one year of UC-approved
fine arts credit.
Water Safety Instructor—If
you are a natural-born teacher and swim like a fish, this
class may be for you. This class trains you in skills you
need to be certified as an American Red Cross Water Safety
Instructor. With the certification you will be able to
teach the ARC “Learn to Swim” program. (Prerequisite—must
have the Fundamentals of Instructor Training certificate
issued within one year prior to training.)
After-school class
